On Liquid Glass Updates
September 15, 2025
This year, I’ve decided not to ship launch day updates for Apple’s newest iOS, macOS, and visionOS updates. This is due to many different reasons, however it mostly boils down to this: The new design isn’t ready and doesn’t amount to an improvement for most of my apps at the moment. While I have many reservations about the theory behind the new design, I do intend to adopt it eventually. For now, here is the state of my apps regarding the new system releases:
- Charcoal: I’ve been working on a full redesign of Charcoal for a while. This redesign will be native to the new design language while keeping the app’s simplicity. Since these are major changes (it’s basically a full rewrite of the canvas), the new version is not ready yet. Right now, the goal is to ship version 2.0 with the redesign in January on Charcoal’s sixth birthday. With this timeline in mind, I decided against a half-hearted implementation of the new design on the current version.
- Modulator: While I’d love to give a concrete timeline, Modulator is pretty far down the list for me right now. The main reason is that adopting the new design well is quite difficult on an app with dense interfaces. I’m also not sure the new design would add much and might actually make the app worse in some ways. For this reason, I’m pausing work on the Modulator redesign for now. It will come eventually, but don’t expect it this year.
- Panelicious: The Panelicious 2.0 update was just released and the rewrite was done with macOS Tahoe in mind. Because of this, I hope to release an update with better support for Tahoe (and a new icon) fairly soon. Until then version 2.0.1 was released to ensure full compatibility on the new system.
- Flipped: Being my simplest app, adopting Liquid Glass was trivial and an update with full compatibility will be rolled out in the next week.
I’d also like to note that while full glassified version of my apps will take a while, all of my apps have been tested on the new systems and work well. If you have any issues, don’t hesitate contacting me.
